You Should Know: Lady Sinatra

February 5th, 2010 by intr0vert

I think it would be a drastic conflict of interest to slurp on a friends band and make an out and out recommendation for you to be into them, so I won’t do that. I’d like to preserve the little bit of integrity I have left so I will instead tell you with absolute honesty that of all of the regular bands that I see on the strip (and I see A LOT of bands on the strip), one of very few that I actually enjoy seeing at least once a month is Lady Sinatra. Their own brand of Rock & Roll is as hard, fast and loud as it is difficult to pin down directly. I sometimes swear that I hear a bit of Motörhead in the backbeat mixed with a bit of that indefinable Sunset Strip sound.  The musicianship is tight and the swagger is loose. If you’ve got a girl that likes to strip then put on “Girl, You’ll Be A Trainwreck Soon” off of their 2nd album Hisses & Kisses and let her do her thing. The band (@LadySinatra) was at one point giving away a free download of the record in exchange for a Tweet, but that offer may have expired. It’s still available through iTunes.

Lead singer and head of Loose Fang Records,  Bunny Holliday recently sat down with evergrowing institution The Real Sunset Strip w/Scheff and The Hawk for the short interview/artist profile above (shot by photographer Andrew Herrold) which should give you a taste of their sound.

But to catch them in action they’ll be playing Monday February 15th at Crazy Girls Gentleman’s Club (Sunset & LaBrea) in West Hollywood with Sink To See and brilliant newcomers Jacuzzis (fb event). Full Disclosure: I’m playing that show, too. But if you haven’t seen Lady Sinatra in on their home turf at The Viper Room then you just haven’t seen them in their destructively natural habitat.

Cicero rolls over in his tomb

June 7th, 2009 by DeadLanternMaT

cicero I’m a firm believer that Twitter is the dumbest shit ever.  I find its very existence to be patently absurd. I’m not one of the 10% of  12 year old girls and my “going on 30″ friends who feel the need to be a Twitter hipster, but hey, that’s just me. I’m an anti-social bastard who hates people and would like the ability to say that in more than “140 characters”. But, whatever makes them feel good about themselves, I guess.

Whether or not Twitter is relevant isn’t really the issue. Recently, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley posted this on his twitter page:

“Pres Obama you got nerve while u sightseeing in Paris to tell us”time to deliver” on health care. We still on skedul/even workinWKEND.”

and then this:

“Pres Obama while u sightseeing in Paris u said ‘time to delivr on healthcare’ When you are a “hammer” u think evrything is NAIL I’m no NAIL”

Lollapalooza 2009 August 7-9 On Sale Now!

March 31st, 2009 by intr0vert

lollapalooza_2009Would you buy tickets to a summer festival…lineup unseen?

The only confirmed band on Lolla 2009 in Grant Park, Chicago is organizer Perry Farrell’s own Jane’s Addiction.

Tickets are Early Bird priced at $175 ($850 VIP) and there is no lineup on the official website.

I’m going to start the completely unfounded rumor that the original Smashing Pumpkins are going to be there. Even though Jimmy Chaimberlin himself quit the new incarnation for it being so far from the original vision.

If anyone wants to buy me a ticket and airfare I’ll totally go.

I’m going to Save the Music from John Mayer and Friends

March 24th, 2009 by intr0vert

Mayer's CardOnly Joking. Although I’m not a true fan of John Mayer’s music, I’ll admit to singing along to “No Such Thing” in my car and I’ve always thought the guy himself was pretty cool. He seems really funny, he can really play and he pulls in some pretty insane kuze (I said it, it’s a word. Is that the spelling we decided on? Kooze? Cuze?). And now I have first-hand confirmation that he is in fact a very cool guy.

Last night a friend and I were just sitting around watching the 30 days where Morgan Spurlock went to Prison. During which she was refreshing Twitter and asked me to put in a twitpic address into my iPhone cause it wasn’t loading for her.with Carl Mayer and James Smith I put it in and the picture had a couple guys in it and I thought, “Hey, Isn’t that the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf 2 blocks away on Sunset Blvd?” I didn’t say all of that outloud but for expositions sake lets say I did. We looked at each other and grabbed our shit and in 30 seconds were out of the apartment. 2 mins later we were telling a couple tall guys, “Give me my damn tickets.” They called up someone (you know who) and we were handed a little card which on one side said JOHN MAYER and on the other had a phone number and instructions to call the Ticket Fairy.

The 2 guys were Carl Mayer and James Smith, brother of the singer-songwriter and an Austrailian Comedian. We snapped a couple photos, they got our info and said adieu, ok so nobody says that. They were very tall, nice guys.

So on Thursday we get to attend the VH1 SAVE THE MUSIC Gala:

“One Splendid Evening will be held on board the new Carnival Splendor, Carnival’s largest and most innovative ship, while the vessel is docked at the Port of San Pedro in Los Angeles. Guests will enjoy dinner, an open bar and additional live entertainment throughout the ship. The next day, the ship sets sail on a special four-day music cruise – the “Mayercraft Carrier 2: Even Craftier” voyage. Proceeds will help restore instrumental music education in America’s public schools and raise awareness about the importance of music as part of a child’s complete education.”

Special Guests: Gavin Rossdale, Jordin Sparks, O.A.R., Sara Bareilles, Guster, Erin McCarley and DJ Logic. Many Twitterers are jealous.

In other news I may be fired.
