Frontman for both Cursive and The Good Life,Tim Kasher has been one of the most prolific songwriters in indie rock. And on October 5th, 2010 he will release his debut solo album, The Game Of Monogamy. Recorded this past January in Whitefish, MT, at SnowGhost Music and in his rental home in the small town, the album marks the first time Kasher has written, recorded, and produced an album under his own name. The first single ”Cold Love,” premiered exclusively on Spin.com yesterday and is also available on label Saddle Creek‘s website.
Saddle Creek recording artist Orenda Fink (of Azure Ray, wife of Todd Fink of The Faint) has made her 2005 debut album Invisible Ones available for free download on her website now through the end of January in an effort to encourage relief effort donations for the current crisis in Haiti. In a very personal letter posted to her site that recounts her time in Haiti spent making music, art, and – most importantly – friends, Orenda asks that people make a donation to a relief effort organization in return for downloading the album. Invisible Ones, her solo debut, was inspired by and mainly written during her travels there in 2003.
I’m fully jazzed that Omaha indierock veterans Cursive will be doing 2 shows this spring on the Sunset Strip. They’ll be out from Feb.16 – Apr.2 supporting Chicago’s Alkaline Trio starting and ending the tour in the LA area. If you haven’t caught Cursive since their days with Cellist Greta Cohn you may be pleasantly surprised with the renewed energy/texture that the addition/replacement of keys/horns has been to the bands live show. I felt like using a lot of slashes today. Need fulfilled. See you next month, Cursive!

Lincoln/Grand Island, NE’s garage rock tornado, Brimstone Howl have a new album coming out TODAY (Nov.24th) on Alive Records. Big Deal. What’s He Done Lately?* was recorded at The Distillery in Costa Mesa, CA with engineer/producer Mike McHugh, known for his work with Black Lips, Jon Spencer and Andre Williams. The album has a less aggressive sound that Lead Singer/Guitarist John Ziegler admits is thematically “a little brighter” than their previous work but describes the goal of the album as ‘heat’. If you buy this album on Vinyl then you should feel the heat that Ziegler, Guitarist Nick Waggoner and Drummer Calvin Retzlaff were going for when they recorded Big Deal… in FULL ANALOG! From Tape to a Wax Master, this is certainly a warm record.
Have a listen for yourself! Here’s a free download of “Suicide Blues” off of Big Deal. What’s He Done Lately? The orange vinyl edition is available for $13 at the BOMP store.
*Yeah, the title is a Joey Ramone quote about Phil Spector.
We at AvantTrash come from the Midwest. Nebraska, specifically. The dead center of the country. The Heartland. The Great Plains. Sound boring? It can be! (There’s a reason most of us fled to the big city besides the outstanding warrants.) But when there is an absence of “something to do”, you are afforded the unique opportunity to make your own good time. This is not a vacuum of creativity, it is a ground as fertile as the dirt beneath your feet. When you don’t have a venue for your band in the Midwest, you go underground…literally. Most bands I’ve ever been in came not from garages, but basements. Some of the best shows I’ve ever seen were subterranean.
There’s a house in Omaha that for the better part of 20 years has been a kind of artists commune. It’s parties are as notorious as it’s residents. Infamous even. It’s called Hotel Frank and this is the environment that Capgun Coup was borne from. Their new record Maudlin has that lazy lo-fi punk sound nailed. Each song on this album sounds like it could come from a different record. I guess that shows their flexibility as artists but cuts in a bit to the territory of the Black Lips and Jay Reatard, but a bit more sophisticated. So even at times a bit like a dirty, midwest Little Joy, but without all the cuteness.
Capgun Coup’s sophomore album Maudlin comes out TODAY and is the follow up to 2007′s Brought to You by Nebraskafish both albums are available for purchase via Conor Oberst*’s Team LoveRecords website.
Limited edition CDs and LPs of Feral Harmonic are now available in the Saddle Creek online store. Hand-assembled at the Saddle Creek office by Grammy* award-winning artist Zack Nipper, each CD and LP is wrapped with a black ribbon and features hand ink-stamped impressions on the cover label and inner/outer packaging, and a booklet of black and white photographs. The vinyl run is a hand-numbered edition of 1,000 and includes a code to download the album in high quality MP3 format.
Old Canes is the brainchild of Chris Crisci (The Appleseed Cast), who wrote and recorded Feral Harmonic in his basement studio. On tour, he is joined by Kelly Hangauer (4th of July), Taylor Hollenbeck, Lucas Oswald (Minus Story), John Momberg (Appleseed Cast/Dactyls; drums on the West coast leg of the tour), and Jeff Stoltz (Drakkar Sauna; drums on the East coast leg of the tour).
“Let Me Up” is the 3rd Single from Cursive‘s Mama, I’m Swollen, available from Saddle Creek.
A new Daytrotter session from the band debuted online yesterday and can be downloaded here. The session features “What Have I Done?” off of Mama, I’m Swollen and “The Casualty” from Cursive’s Domestica, in addition to covers of The Cure‘s “Love Cats” and David Bowie‘s “Modern Love”.
Cursive will be in Las Vegas at the Beauty Bar on Sept 24th and in Tokyo October 26th & 27th. More US tour dates will be announced soon.
Dude, I was literally to the left of the dude wearing the Nebraska hat. In fact, I was facing this chick’s direction as this argument went down. Photo via the Journal Star.
I didn’t even know about the health care rally until my girlfriend mentioned it about thirty minutes before it started. Way to go Obama. Utilize your e-mail list a bit better. Anyway, it was a muggy day and I decided to walk down wearing my They Live tee which garnered a bunch of weird facial reactions from the hippy leftists who weren’t sure whether or not I was with the protesters to said protesters who kept taking pictures of my shirt. Seriously. One dude even got out his camcorder and filmed it. Not me, just the tee. I’m sure this image will be popping up on conservative blogs all over the country with “OBEY” replaced with “OBAMA”. Come to think of it, that’s a pretty clever use…
Are you ready to rock!? Well are you ready for some semi-rockin’, heady, collegiate, Americana?
via their Press Release:
Monsters of Folk – comprised of Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and singer/songwriter M.Ward – will be releasing their first collaborative album on September 22nd. The self-titled effort was recorded in Malibu, CA and Omaha, NE, and produced by Mogis. Although these critically acclaimed artists have shared the stage before, this album marks their first recorded output as a band. The record will be released in North America on Shangri-La Music, and internationally on Rough Trade (UK/Europe), Spunk Records (Australia/New Zealand) and P-Vine Records (Japan). The musicians have made a track from their forthcoming self-titled debut album available for FREE.
Their website, MonstersOfFolk.com is giving away the song, titled “Say Please”, to anyone who visits the site and types “please” into the request form.
Fine by me. I wish I was paid to beat off. I should have stuck with wrestling. And maybe being blessed with more hardbody genes would have been ok too. But I do ok on my own. Read all about it…

Im not sure I totally get the video’s concept but it’s one of my favorite songs off of Mama, I’m Swollen. It features Tania Raymonde (Alex Linus from LOST). Thanks to the press release for that info because I surely don’t watch that fucking show. I’m also the person who asked Mischa Barton “Are You a model?” at the Viper Room last night even though I knew full well who she was. (I only saw 1 episode of The OC ever.) Man, TV is stupid. Go see a fucking concert!
Cursive will be on tour all summer. I’d like to point out that Box Awesome in Lincoln, NE was the bar I used to run sound for. It’s an intimate setting and will probably be the best show in Lincoln all year. Check that out if you are in the area. (pretty sure its sold out)

Recently, while going through a bunch of boxes in my mom’s basement in preparation for a garage sale that never happened, I came across a big shoe box full of pictures. Nearly all of them band pics from roughly 1998-2002, when just about everyone I knew (including myself) were involved in some sort of local rock band. Grand Island in 1999-2000, specifically, were golden years. It seemed like every damn kid in G.I. was in a band and every weekend you could find a show at the Super Bowl or Westside Lanes or The Rock or even Max McGruder’s. There was nothing to do in that town except meth, so any excuse to watch the owner of the Super Bowl move his fake teeth in and out of his mouth if it meant getting to hang out with everyone for a few hours was always worth it. Of course, everybody sucked, but that didn’t stop us from thinking we were awesome. We painted our fingernails and acted ridiculously cool in the most melodramatic manner possible. T.J. wore his guyliner; I had sparkles in my hair. We were all going to get signed, after all and we had to look and act the part. It was only a matter of time…
My roommate alerted me to this scary fucking video which I recognized as being from NTV in Nebraska. I leave for 2 years and you guys have talking mowers and shit? What are you putting in your corn?

I know a couple peeps in this video. And Cursive killed it live at Spaceland a couple weeks ago. They are on fire right now with the addition of 2 new members, if they are coming anywhere near you, I highly recommend you see them.
Starting today (March 1st, which just so happens to be Nebraska’s Birthday!) Cursive is selling their new album online for Just $1. Mama, I’m Swollen doesn’t come out until March 10th but you can download it (legally) through Saddle-Creek.com for the next 9 days but it goes up in price $1 everyday.
I think that cheap pre-releases like this are a VERY SMART idea. The industry is fucked and scrambling to make money off of the MUSIC again and affordability may be the only way to save it. Saddle Creek totally has it right. They’ve been distributing their Vinyl with a free download for years. Once the industry figures out that concert ticket prices and more annoyingly the fucked up “convienience” and handling charges are too high, then we just might have the chance to save music so people can make a decent living at it again.
Next time you are thinking of going to karaoke, go see a band instead.
