Reposted from Horror Site DeadLantern.com – Home of the World Famous Splattercast…which I also contribute to. Episode #150 airing this week!
Are you psyched? Because I’ve got half a chub over this new Nightmare on Elm St. withJackie Earle Haley. Obviously Scott Mendelson from the Huffington post doesn’t have the same south of the border sensation and hasn’t seen the Friday the 13th remake. Because if that is any indication Michael Bay/Samuel Bayer’s re-imagining of ANOES then there will probably be cherry-picked elements from a few of the past Nightmares involved in this film (Brecken Meyer Power Glove not included). Somewhat indicated in the trailer, I’m guessing a little lady is going to be painting the walls and ceiling arterial red on Elm St. It’s too bad they don’t make as many waterbeds as they used to in the 80’s.
I will say the underbite speech impediment is a bit odd as well as the trailer not hinting at any of Krueger’s Pun-ishingly dark ribs at his victims. This could be a dark, straight-faced Nightmare. For this fan’s sake…hopefully not all serious.
What do YOU think?
Thanks to @Kingmob6 for reminding me to post this!
“Let Me Up” is the 3rd Single from Cursive’s Mama, I’m Swollen, available from Saddle Creek.
A new Daytrotter session from the band debuted online yesterday and can be downloaded here. The session features “What Have I Done?” off of Mama, I’m Swollen and “The Casualty” from Cursive’s Domestica, in addition to covers of The Cure’s “Love Cats” and David Bowie’s “Modern Love”.
Cursive will be in Las Vegas at the Beauty Bar on Sept 24th and in Tokyo October 26th & 27th. More US tour dates will be announced soon.
“Weezer is playing a sorta secret show @ The Roxy, u in?” was the text message that woke me up Monday morning. What a glorious way to start the week!
With little prompting I was invited to check out the show which ended up being an 8 song session which goes up Yahoo! Originals (similar to Sessions @ AOL) for Guitar Hero 5 Fridays. Mixed into their 8 song set were 2 new tracks, the current single “If You Are Wondering If I Want You To (I Want You To)“ and “I’m Your Daddy” from the upcoming album produced by Butch Walker. For those unfamiliar, Butch Walker was the focal point of late-90’s breakouts The Marvelous 3 and in the decade since has been writing and producing albums for some of the biggest hit-makers in the world (P!nk, Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne) while releasing brilliant solo albums revered by his rabidly dedicated fans…myself included.
As a fan of Weezer since 1994’s “Blue” Album (Released the Day before my 14th birthday …on Cassette!), and really, who wasn’t? I’ve been disappointed in most of what has been released after 2001’s “Green” (Released the day after my 21st Birthday). But fans of the old sound, take heart! If the 2 new songs from yesterday’s set are any indication of a paradigm shift in Weezer’s sound then I am happy to announce that Butch Walker may have finally cured Weezer of their bad case of queso that plagued most of their 2000’s singles. “Troublemaker” makes my stomach physically ache.
Whoever it was that said ‘Lightning doesn’t strike twice’ obviously doesn’t live on The Sunset Strip.
Lately, The Viper Room has become a hotbed of guitar action! A couple weeks ago, Steve Stevens stopped by to jam with Ginger Wildheart and Billy Morrison on some “Rebel Yell”. A couple nights later Slash joined former Guns ‘N Roses drummer Steven Adler for “It’s So Easy” and “Mama Kin”. (Read About It Here.) And then last Saturday as the dust of the Sunset Strip Music Festival was just beginning to settle, Rock and Roll legend Ace Frehley took the Viper stage by storm with his show of KISS Classics, New Fan Favorites from ANOMALY and his signature model Les Pauls on Fire! And as an added bonus the spaceman even closed his set with 1974’s “Cold Gin” featuring Slash once again as special guest! Really, where else are you going to see a duo THAT HUGE in such an intimate setting. To say that we, as an audience felt privileged would be a gross understatement.
I know what it’s like to slave away for 9+ hours a day in an office or studio in a vast need of auditory stimulation so to brighten your day here are a couple free tracks for your listening pleasure! Both by bands from legendary Rock and Roll College Towns!

The men of Beaten Awake have been a part of the Kent, OH, music scene since the late ’90s, playing in bands like Harriet The Spy(Midwest Indie Legends!), The Party of Helicopters, The Man I Fell In Love With, and “New” Terror Class. Their 2007 debut, Let’s Get Simplified, was released jointly by Fat Possum and Patrick Carney’s (of The Black Keys) label Audio Eagle. Carney also helped the band record Thunder$trokewith Jeff France at Audio Eagle Studios in Akron, OH (Tim Gerak at The Mammoth Cave Studios recorded part of the album as well). Beaten Awake has toured with The Black Keys, Heartless Bastards, and Dax Riggs, in addition to opening for and playing as the backing band of Daniel Johnston. Jon Finley, the singer, is also in Carney’s new band, Drummer.
Thunder$troke will be available October 13th but you can download “Coming Home” here.

Roman Candle’s sophomore album Oh Tall Tree…, released May 12th on Carnival Recording Company, is a loose meditation on the connection between music and longing, inspired by both Tom Stoppard’s play “Rock ‘n’ Roll” and Rilke’s “Sonnets to Orpheus” (which the band had seen, and read, while writing the album in rural England). The album was deemed “Witty, sturdily built and charming pop/rock tunes” by USA Today and a “Modern rock masterpiece” by Paste, while their previous album, The Wee Hours Revue (V2), moved Popmatters to urge “…you need to hear Roman Candle. Go get The Wee Hours Review: because you can, and because it’s damn good” and Rolling Stone to anoint them “Chapel Hill’s [NC] ‘darling’ band on the rise”.
You know how I know that The Sunset Strip is BACK? Because I’ve seen sooo much amazing live music this week! Between The Sunset Strip Music Festival and all of the other fantastic shows that happen on the regular out here, as a live music fan I don’t think I’ve ever felt more at home.
And of all this amazing music I’ve seen lately (honestly 4-5 nights a week), the best act I’ve seen in a while to really, genuinely impress me has been the “Indie Gospel” that comes from NICO VEGA. I’ve seen them 3 times this week alone and everytime feels completely new; but this is not a new band by any stretch. Dan Expand (drums), Rich Koehler (guitar+) and Aja Volkman (vocals) have certainly been making a name for themselves in the indie scene around Los Angeles for years now, but I think very soon this will be a band that will illuminate a lot of peoples’ worlds. Their Self-titled album has been available on Myspace Records since February and what absolutely mystifies me about it is how versatile the sound is while at once being such a cohesive collection. Each song is so different yet such a complete part of a sonic narrative. And an expansive narrative it is for one that comes from just ONE melodic instrument onstage! The way that dancing maestro Rich mixes his guitar sound through Octave and Delay pedals is that of a psychedelic mad scientist whose found the cure for having a bassist or synth player to clutter Aja and Dan’s stage. And believe me, there may never be a big enough stage to hold Aja; within the first minute of seeing them live, you will be in love.
I’m infinitely creeped out by the new trailer for New Moon, the 2nd film in the Mormon Teen Vamporn Twilight saga. Chimpy Eddie Munster Werewolf Tribe (What 17-yr-old gains 30lbs of muscle to keep his role)? Unconvincing “Adrenaline Junkie” Kristen Stewart? Shirtless Emo Robert Pattinson (seeLittle Ashes for homoerotic moneyshot)
Just fuck already, kids! That’s the easiest way to get someone out of your system! Vampy glamour or not once these kids finally hit it it will go from “I can’t live without you. :( ” to “Um, yeah so…you’re great and all… that was fun… I’ve got your number…i’ll call you, really! Let’s get together again, uh, uh…soon!”
By far the creeeeeeeeepiest part of this trailer was “you’re how old?” Dakota Fanning making scarlet sexy immortal jailbait eyes at us like a mini-Madonna ca.1983? Wasn’t she just a yellow baby-toothed 90-year-old Gollem in a tweens body?
I might have to skip this one, I’m in fear of the Mormons taking my soul or wanting to move to Washington or some shit. I’m gonna go have a cry in the shower until I shake some of this confusion.
It’s still the Summer of the SUPERGROUP! The next assembly to follow Chickenfoot, Monsters of Folk and the Dead Weather is THEM CROOKED VULTURES which feature Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) on drums, vocalist & guitarist Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Eagles of Death Metal) and bassist & keyboardist John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin)…thats right LED FUCKING ZEP. The band also has Alain Johannes (QOTSA & Eleven) as live guitarist. The band’s debut album, Never Deserved the Future, will be released in October. Here is a clip!
