Living in LA provides the advantageous opportunity to see some pretty big stars jump onstage unexpectedly and play a couple songs with their friends. Last night’s show at The Viper Room (AliUptown’s Bday! 8-29-2009) was one of these occasions when not 1 but 2 of the original 5 members of Guns ‘N Roses joined the band Aces ‘N’ Eights to play “It’s So Easy” and “Mama Kin” at the end of their set. Slash appeared amiable but a bit withdrawn onstage. Of course he shredded ass like only he can. Adler seemed elated to be playing again with the guitar god and did a good job on the old songs.
I hate when marketing dickholes try to sell you on a band by throwing a bunch of other bands names at you of what they are like. The descriptions are rarely spot on and are completely insulting to all parties involved. But I am kind of a hypocrite so I’ll tell you that if you are into Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand then you might dig UK’s The Cribs. To up the ante I think you should know that the guitarist is the legendary Johnny Marr.
Marr was the guitarist for 80′s mope-rock pioneers The Smiths, with whom co-wrote the best songs Morrissey ever sang. More recently Marr played for Modest Mouse starting with the album We We’re Dead Before The Ship Even Sank. The Cribs album Ignore the Ignorant comes out 9/8 on iTunes and is on pre-order right now in Standard and Deluxe editions. It’s been getting pretty good reviews in England (NME – 8/10)
I’m sure they eat this britindie stuff up like bangers and mash in Europe and it would be good to see it here in the states. Unfortunately all but 3 of their dates are overseas. So if you live in LA or NYC you can catch them live.

Dude, I was literally to the left of the dude wearing the Nebraska hat. In fact, I was facing this chick’s direction as this argument went down. Photo via the Journal Star.
I didn’t even know about the health care rally until my girlfriend mentioned it about thirty minutes before it started. Way to go Obama. Utilize your e-mail list a bit better. Anyway, it was a muggy day and I decided to walk down wearing my They Live tee which garnered a bunch of weird facial reactions from the hippy leftists who weren’t sure whether or not I was with the protesters to said protesters who kept taking pictures of my shirt. Seriously. One dude even got out his camcorder and filmed it. Not me, just the tee. I’m sure this image will be popping up on conservative blogs all over the country with “OBEY” replaced with “OBAMA”. Come to think of it, that’s a pretty clever use…
Heya Avant Trasher Thrashers! I’m back from my extended summer vacation in the midwest and have already jumped back to The Good Life* back here in L.A. as a VIP at Epicenter ’09. Man, life is so hard going to festivals hanging out backstage and in A/C’d tents with limitless free booze and catering! Ack!
Maybe I’ll tell you about it soon. Lots of Summer concerts and new albums to review coming up still! Stay tuned!**
