You Should Know: Orianthi
With the unfortunate loss of this, or maybe any generations’ best live performer, there is the feeling that there is a lack of magic in the universe that the minor stars of today are, hard as they try, sadly unable to produce. But on the horizon are the next generation of prodigies, just like a 5 year old Michael Jackson once was.
If you’ve seen the released footage of Michael’s rehearsals for “this Is It” then you’ve of course been stuck by the PRS-wielding guitarist flanking the King of Pop that is 24-year-old wunderkind Orianthi. Her bio anchors on a glowing endorsement from her idol, Carlos Santana who said, “If I was going to pass the baton to somebody, she would be my first choice.” She’s a Black Magic Woman. Ok he didn’t say that last part. That’s just tacky.
Being Michael Jackson’s Lead Guitarist is like being Kieth Richards to possibly the only frontman greater than Mick Jagger himself. Massive shoes to fill indeed; the lead guitar track on “Beat It” was played by Eddie Van Halen, Jennifer Batten dominated the hook of “Dirty Diana” originally recorded by Steve Stevens (Billy Idol), Slash was MJ’s lead gunner for “Black or White”, and now Orianthi is to be known as the final axe-person for The King.
After such a tragic loss to Pop music it’s good to know that the bland stars of today like Carrie Underwood will at least have talent like Orianthi backing them up as they try to convince the world that they actually have a glimmer of substance.
