DVD/CD Soundtrack Release of True Blood, Season 1
Surprise, surprise a post that’s long overdue. Another thing that might not shock you is that I was at Best Buy at 10 a.m. the day the True Blood Season 1 DVD and soundtrack were released. That’s right, had to get it right then, even though I couldn’t watch it until I got home from work. And I also need to add to the ridiculousness of it all by mentioning I live a block away from Best Buy. I can’t always explain why I do the things I do.

I’ve actually convinced my roommate to get HBO right before Season 2 starts. We’ll of course cancel it after the season ends. There’s a new sexy preview trailer for the new season, which I have posted for all to enjoy. Like the first season, looks like there will be a bit of distance between the book and the show, not that I mind. That ad, might I mention, is also a block from my apartment. It’s a lovely sight to see as I walk to work everyday.
So it’s a week or so later, and I’ve worked my way through the entire season, and have gotten pretty familiar with the soundtrack. Gotta say, I was disappointed with the DVD’s special features, or lack thereof. I’m a sucker for outtakes and deleted scenes. Oh well. I wanted to throw up a quick review of the soundtrack, because I really do enjoy it, and I’m not usually much of a soundtrack type of person. And yes, the DVD came with a True Blood t-shirt. Let my awesomeness overtake you, let it happen.
Besides Jace Everett’s “Bad Things”-which is so perfect as a theme song, you’d think it was written with the show in mind, “Bleed to Feed” is probably my favorite song. CC Adcock & the Lafayette Marquis contribute several songs on the soundtrack (some of which are only available via iTunes thus far) and also played at Rene & Arlene’s wedding party. Their mellow, backwater bluesy sound fits in pretty seamlessly with the feel of the show.
Other standout tracks include ‘Bones’ by Little Big Town, ‘Give it Up’ by Lee Dorsey, and ‘I Don’t Wanna Know’ by Dr. John. One song I didn’t expect to like was The Watson Twins cover of “Just Like Heaven”, but it seems to agree with me. It’s very chill, almost like a lullaby.
The soundtrack as a whole is pretty awesome. I usually don’t give two shits about soundtracks, especially from a TV show. But from watching True Blood, I could tell Alan Ball had good sense about the presence of music in his show, and there were several times during the show that the music caught my attention. He actually took great care in his song choices, and had a few songs/artists in mind even before shooting. This is the type of useless trivia you get from watching episode commentary (Nerd alert!). You also learn about random things like the sugar-free, low carb fake blood Anna Paquin drank.
If you were to check out HBO’s official True Blood website, you’d see that there are actually songs listed under each episode, which I found quite handy. The soundtrack’s getting decent rotation on my iPod, and I’m a bit embarrassed to admit how much I love that damn theme song and how many times I may have rocked out in my bedroom to it. May have. I’ll admit, I was expecting it to be more ‘forbidden vampire sex and mystery-ish’ (yes this is how I best describe music), but its more ’sitting on a porch in Bon Temps drinking really sour lemonade’-a little more upbeat than I expected.
On another note, Alexander Skarsgard is in Lady Gaga’s new video, ‘Paparazzi’ and it is something to behold. And by behold, I mean jerk off to. I’m pro-Gaga, and the fact that he’s in the video makes me love it that much more. And I’m gradually getting used to the idea of Eric Northman with short hair. He’s a gorgeous viking vampire either way, and I would let him pillage and plunder my village without a second thought.
