R.I.P. Lux Interior of The Cramps
On Wed, Feb 4th, Lux Interior (neĆ© Erick Lee Purkhiser) of the seminal (at times semenal) punk band THE CRAMPS died of a “prexisting heart condition”. He died in Glendale and was just 62 years old. I can’t decide which is worse. (Yes I can, it’s Glendale).
The Cramps coined the term “Psychobilly” (from the Johnny Cash song “One Piece At A Time”) and were figureheads in the NYC punk movement during the late 70’s. Lux was the lead singer of the group and wore very little onstage except a minimal piece of black or leopard print and high heels. It was a good look when offset with his scantly clad fireball of a wife, Poison Ivy on hollowbody guitar …hot. Their best known song is “Garbage Man” and you might know “Bikini Girls with Machine Guns” from Beavis and Butthead. Believe me when I say that there are very few idle moments of life when you can’t put on The Cramps and have a dirtier, sexier, creepier day.
Old punkers are dropping like flies. (R.I.P. Ron Asheton of the Stooges)
