To Do In L.A. – “Twilight” Screening with Director Catherine Hardwicke – 11.22.2008

October 31st, 2008 by intr0vert

I’m posting this just to entice my co-author to come back to L.A.

Sat, Nov 22nd – 5:00 PM @ Arclight Sherman Oaks: After the screening of Twilight there will be a Q & A with Director Catherine Hardwicke. Too bad this movie is only PG-13, I can tell from here that it would be a lot better if it had some Interview With A Vampire caliber victim-boobie.

I’d tell you to hurry up and buy tickets but – oh look at that… I just bought the LAST ONE! I’m going to be surrounded by vampire loving 13-year-old JAPs in Sherman Oaks. And probably some old, fat dudes.

I’ve waited all year to smear blood on my jugs and go to a bar. At last my day has come.

Halloween is my favorite holiday. Well, technically my birthday is my favorite holiday, but those seem to be getting less and less exciting each year (now that I am the highest number I can be). I love costumes, make-up (especially gory/special effects type make-up), and I love all things horror. In fact, numbers 1 and 2 of my top 3 all-time favorite movies are horror movies. (And if you don’t know either of these, you toads don’t know me).

The Little Ones w/What Made Milwaukee Famous @ The Echo

October 29th, 2008 by intr0vert

I’ll be at this show. I thought the Walkmen were playing… they aren’t.

The Little Ones || Listen

You know that TV footage of baby birds eating chewed-up worms from their mothers’ mouths? Or doe-eyed seals skidding across the Antarctic ice? ‘Morning Tide’ is so fabulously cute it’s like viewing all of the above through a fog of candy floss.

There’s little deviation from the pop blueprint laid out so scrumptiously on their first outing, and – as deeply in thrall to melody as they obviously are – you imagine The Little Ones would struggle to write a song that didn’t sound akin to the sun sparking. Not that this matters one jot; from the title tune, to previous single ‘Ordinary Song’, to album highlight ‘All Your Modern Boxes’, the band forage through every trick ever deployed in the history of indie-pop to incite smiling. There’s Lemonheads-indebted handclaps throughout; the reverb-drenched jangle of Teenage Fanclub; even wry, wordy Guided By Voices-style outbursts, courtesy of singer and songwriter Ed Reyes. ‘Morning Tide’ is a collection of songs that take the word ‘pop’ in ‘pop music’ literally, bursting with effervescence and joy. – NME

To Do in L.A.: Halloween/Dia De Los Muertos Novembre 1st.

October 29th, 2008 by intr0vert

From now on I want to spell October as Octobre…I think it will look nicer on posters. Novembre gets it too.

So what is going on in Hollywood on Halloween? I haven’t a Zombie-fucking clue! Unless I find an EPIC party, I’m just gonna get sexy and dance like last year, wherever that may be. But the day after will be a sweet treat for sure. On Novembre 1st after your hangover has been subdued by a rush of sugar via snack sized bags of black and orange M & M’s you can head over to Hollywood Forever Cemetery (6000 Santa Monica Blvd) from 4 – 11pm for Dia De Los Muertos. Be sure to put a sugar skull on Johnny Ramone’s Statue. More info @ LadyOfTheDead.com

Anyone watch the season finale of Mad Men?

October 28th, 2008 by AliUptown

The ending was surprisingly non-cryptic. This show is so very genius to me, I feel about it the way my co-author feels about ‘The Wire‘ (which I tried very hard to get into, but gave up after 3 episodes. I’ve been told by numerous people and Wikipedia that it gets better. Maybe another time.). Anycrap, I got a kick out of the SNL sketch with Jon Hamm last weekend, thought I’d share.

I gotta be honest, there was more to this post, but it somehow got deleted, and I haven’t the energy to rewrite the whole thingy.

Now let’s get me outta this skirt.

Presidential Dance-Off, Y’all!

October 27th, 2008 by intr0vert

Just think, in just One Week we will have elected the first African-American as President! And we will put a dirty old, out-of-touch shitbag in the toilet of failure for hopefully the last time! And with any luck California will have the wisdom to vote in the interest of HUMAN RIGHTS and these religious psychos will fuck off with their ban on gay marriage! Vote No On Prop 8 and Hell Yeah on Barack Obama for President! Now enjoy this presidential dance-off video (the production quality is actually very good):

Live Review: Tegan and Sara, City and Colour, Girl In A Coma; 10.19.2008 @ The Fonda, Hollywood

October 27th, 2008 by intr0vert

There is a lot to love about Tegan And Sara, pretty much everything in fact. They’re adorable Canadian twins that write the best indie-pop out there, what more do you want? But the best part about a Tegan and Sara crowd is that being predominantly younger girls, anyone over 5′7″ has an AMAZING, unobstructed view of the show! Ok, don’t get me wrong, the crowd was great. Sara herself exclaimed that the audience was the best out of the 4 at Hollywood’s Music Box @ The Fonda Theatre. This being the last stop of a pretty solid year and a half of touring behind 2007’s The Con they played a pretty tight set with plenty of evidence of change since the album’s release. Tempo, Tone and Instrumentation seemed to differ slightly from record; It could be that reproducing what The Sisters Quin and Chris Walla created in the studio would be nearly impossible or because after their journey around the world they, themselves and their songs had changed. This is starting to sound like fan fiction, so I might as well you about this dream I had about them the other night… ok I’ll save that one, because I should probably tell you that they had some decent support on this tour with Girl In A Coma and City And Colour.

Congrats to AliUptown: Chicago named murder Capitol of the US!

October 26th, 2008 by intr0vert

You’ve beaten New York and Los Angeles! Way to go Chi-city!

And according to this article there is plenty of room for improvement:

Chicago is on pace to exceed 500 murders by the end of the year, but that number is far short of even approaching a record. In every year between 1991 and 1994, there were more than 900 homicides in the city, peaking in 1992 with 943 murders.

The standing record for homicides in Chicago dates back to 1974, when there were 970 murders. Guess some people were really mad about whatever “25 or 6 to 4″ meant.

But I guess that’s what happens when everyone is in the mob running moonshine from speakeasys and carrying around Tommy Guns in violin cases, am I right?

Better Luck in 2009!
Be safe.

(Holds back Jennifer Hudson reference. That would be obscene.)

Brad Neely has posted 3 new 30 second videos as Brad Neely: America Now on Adultswim.com which seem to feature 2 costumed men going around the country rapping about America. There will be 12 shorts total and they will be used as bumpers for Adult Swim on Cartoon Network.

Cardinal Sins: A Review of Ryan Adams’ Cardinology

October 25th, 2008 by intr0vert

There was a time over half a decade ago when I wore a jeans jacket. For the first time ever, people came up to me saying, “Hey, you kinda remind me of…” and I wasn’t offended. It was because these people we’re cool enough to know who Ryan Adams was… and because I was drinking straight from a bottle of Old Crow. I miss those days and consider Ryan Adams my hair Idol. But beyond that I consider him an amazingly prolific songwriter. Right Now, while you are reading this, Ryan Adams has written 2 songs…it’s true.* So when Ryan Adams & The Cardinals: Cardinology landed in my mailbox thanks to the advanced music fairy, I rushed to see if the latest batch of tunes would blow my little mind like Heartbreaker, Gold or Demolition did.

Uncle Karl can rob me anytime: A rant by AliUptown.

October 23rd, 2008 by AliUptown

I may not be using my degree in Fashion Design right now, and I may be outta the fashion retail game so to speak, but I am still affected by amazing design. Not to mention (although I have) that Karl Lagerfeld can do whatever he wants, he could take a crap on my chest and call it a necklace. I worship him, I really do. These shoes were in Harper’s Bazaar over a month ago-I just got busy and forgot to post my little worship-blog. They rendered me speechless then and they still do now. Madonna wore them a few weeks ago to a premiere. The press cheekily called them a ‘misfire’, but they can go fuck themselves. Anyone who doesn’t ‘get’ these can also. I stand behind my love of guns and shoes and gunshoes. The end.

Check out my review of Tegan and Sara on Filter-Mag.com!

I have posted a review of the Tegan and Sara, Girl In A Coma and City and Colour Concert at the Fonda from last Sunday. This review of the last show of the tour is up on Filter Magazine’s Site. I have my own draft with PLENTY of pictures and swear words that will be posted here soon. Im trying to simplify life a bit because things are a busy mess right now. I haven’t done laundry all week! I’m wearing winter tubesocks and recycling underwear here!

T.W.I.: Admitting I have a problem.

October 20th, 2008 by AliUptown

My friends are constant victims of my drunk texting. My roommate and I sometimes have enough sense to switch phones, to keep our friends safe, but I always find a way, an enabler. When’s the last time I drunk texted? As recent as last Saturday night, it’s true.

A real low point was during last years’ ‘Shop Chicago“, where a friend and I took full advantage of free booze in the early afternoon, from there, bar-hopping in Wicker Park and I won’t even tell you how the night ended. But I digress. At one point, I was in the bathroom of The Pontiac, making several attempts to spell “Subterranean“, trying to get some poor fellow to meet me there. I think I made a good 4-5 attempts before he got annoyed and stopped replying. Bad news bears.

Billy Corgan is Gerard Way’s dad?

October 19th, 2008 by intr0vert

What is funny about this photo is when AliUptown and myself were at Taste of Chaos back in 2004, My Chemical Romance was performing and I told her, “Gerard Way reminds me of a little Billy Corgan”. And sure enough, Pumpkinhead has even called Gerard Way his son in interviews.

What surprised me about Gerard Way when MCR came out was how old he was. I thought for sure he was like 21 when at the time he was 28! (He’s 31 now any maybe looks 24). Unless he starts falling apart or gets addicted to crack, he’s going to be ageless like Joan Jett and Prince. We’ll see what happens in the next 19 years.

Thanks to Tonya for being friends with My Chem and hooking us up with those guest passes a few years ago. Go check out her blog Touring with Tonya.

Gerard sure does have a hot wife, too.

In conclusion I think that Smashing Pumpkins should reform with all the original members so I can finally give a shit enough to see them live like I’ve wanted to since I was 15. C’mon guys, “Today” was my class song!

Album Review: The Little Ones “Morning Tide”

October 19th, 2008 by intr0vert

I say this in the least dickish way possible, but Los Angeles’ The Little Ones current sound makes them the perfect opening act. There is a positive energy to the music that gently raises you up without rocking you so much to ever become obtrusive. They aren’t breaking boundaries, they are just making music. The guitars have a chime and shimmer like a doorbell choir and hardly a hint of distortion. The rounds at the end of “Everybody Is Up To Something” are the peak of The Little Ones frenzy which hardly breaks a mezzo forte.
