I quit shopping at Wal-mart about a year ago. I’m ok with paying a little more for what I need at a locally owned grocery store in my neighborhood. If they don’t have something I go to Target. Who, by the way, gives 5% of their income to charities.
A few years ago I witnessed something truly frightening. Wal-mart closed its store on 281 in Hastings and opened slightly down the highway a brand new Super Wal-mart. If that isn’t awful enough, you’d think by the town’s reaction that everyone just won a million dollars. The opening of Super Wal-mart was celebrated all through the village. Our high school band played for the grand opening, people roamed there lead coated, sweat-shop aisles for hours and my high school students decided it was the new “cool” late-night hang out. We don’t have a Target in Hastings…in fact the only other discount stores we have are Dollar Tree and a sad K-Mart. There are (I’m not joking here) 5 other places to buy clothes here…yes I’m including the Goodwill and a consignment shop. I feel bad that Hastings folk don’t have more to choose from…but come on, folks…Celebrating the birth of a wasteful, sexist, money hungry, small town crunching monster coming to town? Seems silly to me.
